Atlantis Casino Resort Spa + Crestron = Reno Magic
A newly updated outlet serves as the technological hub for the entire property
August 30

When the team at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada, began to give their sportsbook a makeover, they made a key decision: that particular part of the operation would serve as the technological center of the property.

“We've made our sportsbook the central hub for the entire property because of DM NVX AV-over-IP technology,” says Zak Gulling, CIO of both the Atlantis and the Monarch Casino Resort Spa Black Hawk (Colorado) properties, which are owned and operated by Monarch Casino & Resort, Inc. (Nasdaq: MCRI). For the uninitiated, AV-over-IP is shorthand for “audio-visual over internet protocol,” a technology that can deliver content at near-zero latency over a network — and not only is it fast and efficient, it’s incredibly scalable.

It's just one aspect of the Crestron technology that can be found throughout the resort. Crestron lighting is used in most common areas, and suites are outfitted with the Crestron Home® OS and its attendant solutions, including control and shading. (More on that in a moment.)

For the sportsbook, however, a robust AV-over-IP solution was a must.

“Everything distributes across the network from that point, with the exception of our meeting rooms,” says Gulling. “They have their own head end, but we could route between the two.” That potential for connectivity anywhere in the resort is a big part of the system’s success. “It doesn't matter where you are on the property — you plug in a DM NVX AV-over-IP device, and we can show our content anywhere.”

A Single Distribution Point

An expandable solution is a must in a gaming setting, as Gulling explains: “Because of all the feeds that are required, including DirecTV, Dish Network, horse racing, even local and network TV for NFL games and so on, it’s absolutely vital that our system can handle it all.” By standardizing on a single technology, other rooms full of gear could be taken offline as the casinos’ content feeds (and other functions) were consolidated into a single room. “The solution tidies everything up and makes preventative maintenance easier with a single distribution point.”

At the center of the sportsbook is a new 64-foot-wide LED video display that can handle 16 events at once. “We can change the aspect ratios of the different feeds, run a ticker, name it,” says Gulling. “And it’s all tied to the Crestron system, which makes switching content and sizes very, very easy.” The sportsbook also features 24 race carrels so that guests can play the ponies in individual spaces. “They all have 24-inch screens in them with Crestron controlling those,” says Gulling.

As we mentioned, the technology brings a near-zero-latency benefit to the video streams in the sportsbook — simply put, it’s video with no lag. “It’s a vital feature, especially when you do in-game betting,” explains Gulling. “The game needs to be real-time when people are watching it. You can't have somebody watching a game on their phone and cheering before everybody else knows what's going on.” Some of the need is driven by what’s called the “prop bet” — in-game side bets in which everything from pro football coin tosses to college basketball free throws can be wagered on.

Intuitive Control

Speedy video is just one aspect of the overall package, of course — a key to the overall resort experience is something Crestron’s been developing and refining since the company’s inception: Control. Simple, easy-to-use interfaces for both staff and guests are vital.

Gulling has a prime example: “Our spa, Spa Atlantis, is Forbes Four-Star rated — one of just a few in the world with that designation.” The systems in the spa can be set to provide the perfect environment for a massage or treatment with a single tap. “The therapist just hits a start button, and the room knows what type of massage and how long it should last, so the lighting, audio, and climate automatically adjust.” Video displays will present cozy firelight scenes in winter or Hawaiian beaches for a Lomilomi massage.

The spa illustrates something that drives high ratings across the entire property, says Gulling. “Our watchword is consistency. Our audio's consistent, our lighting's consistent, the video's consistent, so it's repeatable every single time, and we run all that through Crestron.” That extends to the Forbes Four-Star-rated Atlantis Steakhouse. “A staffer simply hits the ‘open’ button, and the restaurant is set, lighting, video, audio — everything.”

Into the Suites

One-touch operations extend into the guest rooms. “In our high-end VIP suites, we can automate drapery and lighting using Crestron touch panels and provide content via DM NVX AV-over-IP,” says Gulling. “Our keypads have a button labeled ‘good morning’ that slowly brings up lights, opens shades, brings up music, and more. The guest doesn’t need to be a tech wizard — we were able to make it very simple and understandable for a guest to use.”

Gulling has been with the organization since the 1990s, so he’s seen how technology has evolved in the last three decades to provide this kind of high-end vibe. “When you tried to put these amenities in the rooms before these advancements, you ended up with four or five different remotes. Guests were always mad. We were always sending staff to rooms to help, and those team members couldn’t focus on other issues. Crestron’s fixed all of that.”

DM NVX® technology also gives the suites more flexibility when it comes to content choices. “If a specific football game isn’t carried on the regular channel lineup in the room, we can send their preferred content to that room,” says Gulling. The same kind of content selection applies to other parts of the resort, from common areas to meeting spaces.

Always Updating

The Atlantis sportsbook is just the latest refresh project in a continuing series of updates for the resort. “We find an area that needs updating, focus on that to completion, and move on to the next one,” says Gulling. That includes the guest rooms. “We took the rooms all the way down to the studs and, in some cases, changed the footprint of bathrooms and so on. It’s a constant process, and I think that truly sets the Atlantis apart from other properties. We are always working on something new to enhance it. We reinvest back in the property to make it better.”

And a big part of that refresh cycle is Crestron technology. “I remember when there were little volume controls in restaurants that adjusted two or three audio feeds, and that was it,” Gulling notes. “With Crestron solutions, we can control audio across the entire property from a single location to ensure consistency.” (The resort has also been investing in the Crestron XiO Cloud® technology management platform for staff access, control, and reporting on things such as room use.)

All of those elements allow for a high-end experience that’s repeatable with every visit, says Gulling. “I keep using the word ‘consistency,’ but that’s what this is all about. When you come here, you know exactly what to expect, and the technology we’ve deployed helps us accomplish that every time with just a few simple commands.

“Ultimately, this allows every member of the staff to focus solely on the guests and not on the technology.”
