Crestron Marine: Harnessing the Power of Automation
For deployments in marine projects, Crestron automation solutions provide benefits for guests and crew
January 27
Transitioning from D3 Pro Software to Crestron Home SIMPL Integration Modules in the Crestron Home OS

When Crestron was founded half a century ago, the solutions that put the company on the map were centered around control and automation. Those technologies remain a fundamental part of our portfolio of hardware and software offerings — and that extends to marine solutions.

For deployments in marine projects, our automation solutions provide dual benefits: They improve experiences and efficiencies for both guests and crew. Intuitive controls coupled with “no-touch” automated functionalities mean that every guest will be treated to experiences that maximize comfort and convenience. For the crew, our technology provides tools to manage a ship’s systems, maintain its platform, and customize user interfaces for clients — in short, automation optimizes operational efficiency.

Anticipating the Needs of the Guest

“Think about a guest’s experience when they first step onto a superyacht,” says Director of Marine Daniel Kerkhof. “There are two distinct tiers of functions. One operates completely in the background, providing everything from the power to run everything efficiently to the myriad safety and security systems on board. The other set provides everything from automated lighting scenes to completely intuitive control of entertainment, stateroom climate, and so on.”

The word “intuitive” is especially important here, notes Kerkhof: “A guest should feel as comfortable aboard the vessel as they do in their own home.” To that end, a system needs to account for time and location. “This isn’t a hotel — something that’s stationary,” says Kerkhof. “The fact that a vessel may be in constant motion adds a level of complexity to these systems.” While solutions that lean into artificial intelligence and machine learning are on the rise, the notion of a true “virtual assistant” aboard a vessel is not yet a reality — and that means that the crew needs to be very involved in addressing the needs and comfort of the guests aboard the yacht.

Maximum Efficiency

When deployed correctly, those systems can be immensely helpful to the crew. “In the simplest example, a motion sensor or an indicator that tells the crew a light’s been switched on can provide a trigger: If a crew member sees the owner is waking up, and they know that within 15 minutes of waking up he likes to have a coffee in his office, those sensors and indicators can act as signals.” It’s a bit of an oversimplification, of course, as Kerkhof further explains: “Our technologies help them to keep an overview of everything that is happening onboard and helps them to do their work with speed and efficiency.”

That goal of maximum efficiency extends to the kinds of customizable user interfaces and centralized control that we’re known for. “It’s about having an overview of what is happening, who is where on the vessel, and knowing that all the equipment is in an operational mode,” says Kerkhof. “Our custom UIs help them to communicate. For example, we often see Crestron touch screens in the galley to notify the kitchen staff what drink or food is needed — and where — so they can prepare the order and serve it straight away.”

Maximum Reliability

Of course, one of the most important factors in any automation system that traverses open water is reliability. “Reliability is always a core value for any product or solution when we start the development process,” says Kerkhof. In fact, many systems that Crestron applies to deployments on land are developed with marine standards in mind first and foremost. “If a solution can tolerate everything that the marine environment throws at it, it can certainly handle home, hospitality, or business applications.” Couple that with our rigorous testing regimen, and clients and crew can trust that the stuff will simply work. “We have a reputation for this — and we carefully maintain that reputation,” says Kerkhof. That also means nurturing partnerships. “Onboard networks are third-party solutions, so we work hand-in-hand with those manufacturers to ensure our standards are met,” he adds.

That commitment to quality requires quite a bit of vigilance — especially since a bevy of new and advancing technologies are poised to make the experience of yacht automation even more robust. “We know that our solutions will have to evolve to accommodate the growing demand for 8K video. Multi-channel audio is a growth segment and ensuring that anyone can hear exactly what they desire — at any time, anywhere in the world — is a must aboard a superyacht. “The other area of growing demand is tunable lighting,” says Kerkhof. “Human-centric and circadian lighting systems are technologies that appear to have a positive impact on health and well-being, and I see them being adopted more and more in this market — after all, these clients demand the latest and greatest technologies.”

And Sustainability, Too

One aspect that may not be an everyday, top-of-mind function for superyacht owners and crew is sustainability — but the demand for those solutions is expanding. “There is a big drive for energy efficiency and eco-friendly practices on yachts,” says Kerkhof. The industry’s aware that changes are needed for the planet and our oceans.” The right automation and control systems can do everything from powering down devices that aren’t needed to managing shading solutions so they can optimize onboard heating and cooling.

“Crestron’s also very mindful of the various regulations and certifications that are now required to meet sustainability standards,” says Kerkhof. “Regulations can have small variations between states, countries, continents, and specific markets, however, we aim to keep abreast of them all.”

Meeting those goals — and the ability to automate solutions that meet the proper requirements — are just one more part of the big picture for the staff running the ship. “Ultimately, for operators and crew, we’re satisfying the need for a full overview of the yacht as well as control of specific environments,” says Kerkhof.

“And as for the owners and their guests, it’s all about customization,” Kerkhof notes. “Customization is personalization. And having a personalized experience is the most luxurious experience a yacht owner can have. That’s why they ordered a custom-built yacht, right?”
