Crestron’s SAVe Certification: A Sustainability Milestone

Crestron’s SAVe Certification:
A Sustainability Milestone

A sustainability initiative undertaken by Crestron has resulted in a new certification for the company: Crestron is now SAVe Certified after participating in a program held last July at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (Lamont), a research institute in Columbia University’s Climate School.

And Crestron is the first manufacturer to receive that certification.

What is SAVe?

First, some background:

SAVe has been part of Crestron’s overall sustainability initiative since early 2024. We dug into SAVe’s story back in April on the Crestron blog:

According to President and Founder Christina De Bono, “SAVe is an all-volunteer, US-based 501c3 organization. Our mission is to bring stakeholders together in the AV industry to do our part in taking concerted action to achieve the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals.”

And as for those aforementioned sustainable development goals:

In 2015, all 193 member nations of the United Nations unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — and at the heart of this agenda are the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). The goals are broad, including everything from climate action to the eradication of poverty.

At first blush, taking stock of all 17 — and thinking about real-world solutions that achieve those goals — may seem overwhelming. But, as Kitty van der Heijden of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated bluntly in a discussion at Ledin University late last year, “Calling achieving the SDGs by the end of this decade as mission impossible is not an acceptable answer.”

The Workshop

The workshop held at Columbia outlined the steps an AV company can take to embrace the concept of sustainability — and then begin to take concrete steps to implement a plan, a process that ends with a certification for participants. The program is an extension of concepts that were discussed in depth at the first SAVe Conference, held back in March on the UCLA campus. As we’ve noted on our blog:

The conference, titled “A Call for Leaders,” was just that. While Crestron led as the conference’s largest sponsor, the other companies supporting this mission included major players in the AV industry, including Microsoft, Sony, Shure, Legrand, and many more. Every organization that’s signed on is keenly aware of their responsibilities — not to mention the demands they’re seeing from both customers and governments.

“Each of these companies made it clear that they understood the scope of the problem and that we all need to work together to find industry-wide solutions,” says Michael Rogers, Crestron’s senior sustainability program specialist. “I heard people say things such as, ‘What kind of future do we want for our industry? What kind of future do we want for our companies?’ This is an opportunity for us to address these challenges together and achieve our sustainability goals faster.”

Basic Information

The workshop — attended by no less than 30 Crestron employees from multiple departments — began with some background. “The beginning of the workshop included information about e-waste, places around the globe getting overrun with plastics, components, old electronics, and wiring,” says John Hulen, Crestron’s director of channel marketing for education. “The presenters provided historical data on how much waste has been generated and explained how current levels of production will continue to overwhelm our global environment. An example: Dr. Beizhan Yan, a research professor at Lamont-Doherty, shared his research on the way plastic particles trickle into our water supply — and their impacts on the environment and human health, along with solutions to mitigate them.

“As the day progressed, the participants were taught about the United Nations 17 SDGs,” adds Hulen. A core message of the event held at Crestron HQ is that all 17 of the UN SDGs are interconnected. “You can't solve poverty without solving inequality,” Rogers explains. “You can't solve climate change without addressing clean energy.”

Next up were breakout sessions, says Hulen: “After breaking into smaller groups, we worked through exercises to consider how different goals offer endless opportunities for any person or company to participate in the efforts to reach them. Then, each group shared the ideas and thoughts from the exercises with the rest of the workshop attendees.” Each action or initiative mentioned during the workshop was grouped into seven categories, with Product Design leading the way.

The Insights

In addition to understanding what needed to change, Hulen noted what elements were already in place. “One insight which struck me — which has been true all along — is that designing AV systems with automation and control in every system may be one of the simplest ways to reduce energy usage. It’s the first of the three Rs of recycling – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

“By utilizing shut-down timers, occupancy sensors, room scheduling technology, and basic automation, system designers, installers, and users may be able to considerably reduce or eliminate unnecessary energy consumption while AV technology isn’t being used,” he says. “While it might seem counterintuitive, spending some money during construction or renovation projects to add room control and automation can save money over time, reduce CO2 emissions, and extend the life of electronics.

“Over the past few years, Crestron has already made strides in reducing plastics in packaging, moving towards plant-based materials and recycled materials where possible, and manufacturing products with waste reduction as one of the considerations,” he adds. “Crestron is working towards eliminating extra cables, mounting brackets, accessories, and fillers wherever possible. Additionally, our product development teams are working to optimize material usage and reduce labeling with laser engraving.”

Next Steps

The program also focused on the critical aspect of interdepartmental collaboration: Can product engineers create a smaller form factor that needs less packaging? And can the shipping specialists find ways to reduce the bulk of the box?

“The diverse mix of departments within the organization sparked a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives — and that led to the creation of unique and transformative initiatives through a comprehensive approach to problem-solving,” says Rogers. “Collaboration across departments resulted in innovative solutions and fostered unity and shared purpose among employees. It was evident that when individuals break free from their departmental confines and collaborate, the potential for innovation and impact significantly increases.”

And that potential will be ultimately realized through an ongoing process, says Rogers. “Crestron has taken decisive action to integrate sustainability into its core strategy. The company has launched a series of monthly workshops, ensuring that all three pillars of sustainable development—environmental, social, and economic—are deeply embedded in its practices.”

These continuing workshops — all created with the concept of cooperation across multiple departments — focus on:

  • Facilities Management
  • Social Sustainability
  • Design for Sustainability
  • Supply Chain and Manufacturing

“We’ve committed ourselves to building a more sustainable world by leading through action and helping to drive these initiatives forward across the entire AV industry," says Brad Hintze, EVP of global marketing at Crestron. “And becoming the first SAVe Certified company is a terrific example of that philosophy.”
