Music for Business
A platform called SoundMachine is now available for commercial deployments on the Crestron DM NAX® Audio-over-IP platform
January 8
Music For Business

Streaming services for residential and personal use have been around for roughly a decade in their current form, allowing the listener to curate their preferred playlists for home, car, and headphones. Streaming has opened up a world of possibilities for music fans, as it’s a fairly inexpensive way to dabble in a variety of genres — via intentional exploration or the algorithms provided by the services themselves.

Streaming music in commercial spaces, however, brings its own set of challenges. In addition to ensuring that all the licensing fees and requirements are fulfilled, there are a host of other factors in the mix. Is the music the right fit for the business? Does it match variables such as setting the proper mood for a moment, or mirroring the “vibe” of the time of day? Is it delivered with an incredibly simple interface so that staff can focus on customer service and not fiddle with an app?

Enter SoundMachine, a firm whose demos have made a big impact on the Crestron dealer and integrator community — especially now that their solution is completely integrated with DM NAX® Audio-over-IP.

"Once the customers contract the service with us, they are off the hook from the licensing perspective."

The Licensing

Matteo Luppi, the firm’s CEO, says several things set SoundMachine apart from other services. First, it’s specifically designed as a B2B. Second, the available catalog on the platform is nothing short of enormous: “We have about 55 million tracks available,” he says. “We allow importing from any music service — Spotify, Apple Music, name it.”

That feature represents a monumental, ongoing effort by SoundMachine. They’re a global company, and there are no less than four licensing services in the US alone. Each of those licensers ensures that artists and composers are compensated for their work — and Luppi’s legal team works with all of them. “If you have a playlist that you like, you can import it onto our platform and then automatically get its license for business in doing so,” Luppi explains. While laws differ wildly across the 60-plus countries in which SoundMachine does business, the company either pays the license on behalf of the client (as is the case in the US and Canada) or works with the client to ensure any fees are covered.

As Luppi puts it, “Once the customers contract the service with us, they are sort of off the hook from the licensing perspective.”

The integration between SoundMachine and Crestron for Business brings your curated stations and playlists to a space in a few simple steps:

  • Access SoundMachine playback controls directly from the Crestron app on Crestron devices, mobile, or tablets.
  • Add zones to your listening stream for seamless transitions from one area to another.
  • Play multiple streaming sessions throughout your business from the same SoundMachine subscription.

The Interface

There are several ways to curate the music you’d like for your space.

“There are 500 human-curated stations that we put together by genres for clients,” says Luppi. “As I mentioned, they can import their own stations or playlists. From there, they can create mixes — as in, they can combine these stations and say, ‘I want 20% of this and 30% of that and 50% of that one.’”

That content curation is part of the elegance of the interface. “A client can just literally drag and drop and create a mix,” says Luppi. Then it’s simple to schedule either stations or mixes into a schedule — something up-tempo over lunch, perhaps mellower for a restaurant’s dinner hour, for example. “They can basically create different music environments throughout the day,” he adds.

The content can be scheduled for locations within an enterprise or chain, or a zone in a single building. “Think about a hotel and the need to create different environments, whether it's a pool area, the gym, or the lobby,” says Luppi. “All these environments can be managed via the same license with different content playing at the same time.”

"To my knowledge, we’re the only B2B service that is fully integrated with your DM NAX Audio-over-IP products."

Beats Per Minute

SoundMachine offers two levels of service, and the premium level includes high-definition audio and a deep understanding of music, mood, and branding. “We have a group of customers that are what we call enterprise customers, and those are the ones we do the full curation for,” says Luppi. His in-house curators understand the impacts of various elements of music — the beats per minute, the tempo and key of a piece, and its production — even a misplaced two-second guitar solo can break the vibe.

“We have some demanding clients in the high-end retail world,” says Luppi. “They want simplicity, and they want a perfect ambiance. They tell me, ‘Well, first, we don't even want to know how to log in. But most of all, we want our own sound. We spend a lot of money on branding, furniture, and location, and we want to make sure that the music also sounds right. We don't want to leave that up to the store manager or staffer on a shift to pick the sound of a store. We want a very particular sound — not just something that is off the shelf.’"

“In those cases we have a team of curators that comes in, they have a briefing with the marketing team, and they tell us all the information they have available they think is relevant,” says Luppi. “We create a specific playlist, and then everything we do evolves as the brand evolves. If they're coming up with a new collection, for example, then we change the content as the brand changes the offering to make sure that there is a good match between the two.”

When the content hits the Crestron audio solution, then it really shines. As Luppi notes, “To my knowledge, we’re the only B2B service that is fully integrated with your DM NAX Audio-over-IP products — there’s a quality ‘match’ there, and it shows.

“Crestron’s approach is like ours — it’s indicative of the way we think about our service and the way that we really focus on music, the quality of the service, the UI, the delivery, and the customer support.”
